Summer is the most dangerous time for teenagers to be driving in California and throughout the rest of the country. Every year, fatal car accidents involving teenagers increase during the summer months, especially around the Fourth of July.
Car accidents continue to be the leading cause of death for teenagers in California and many parents remained worried about the safety of their teens when they get behind the wheel. Teens are the most likely to be seriously injured or killed in a car accident during the summer months because this is the time of the year that they are driving the most.
Allowing your teenager to get behind the wheel this summer can be a scary experience but there are steps parents can take to reduce the risk of their teen being in a car accident in California.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners have put together a list of tips for parents and teens on how to keep teen drivers safe and free from car accidents. This organizations recommends that parents create and set expectations for their teens before they allow them to start driving.
Some of the rules and expectations to set with teen drivers are listed below:
- Limit the number of passengers that can be in your teen's car.
- Prohibit any cellphone use when driving.
- Set a curfew to make sure teens are not driving late at night when they are most likely to be killed in an accident.
- Tell your teen to speak up when riding with other teens to make sure all teens are practicing safe driving behaviors.
While it is impossible to prevent all car accidents, following these tips can give parents and teenagers peace of mind when they get behind the wheel and hopefully reduce the chances of their teen being in a car accident this summer.
